There will be a Broxtowe council meeting and vote on Monday 23rd June, 7pm, at the Town Hall, Foster Avenue. Nigel Clifton, owner of Out of This World, will be talking for 3 minutes before the vote. Supporters of the shop are urged to come along and support.

I was dismayed when I discovered that Out Of This World was under threat of closure due to a planning application from the neighbouring Thai restaurant and a wrangle with the landlord Blockbuster. I understand that Nigel Clifton, the owner, was promised the lease by Blockbuster, as long as he was a good tenant. But it appears that at the same time Blockbuster has promised it to the restaurant next door, as long as they get planning permission to change the shop into a restaurant.

I can only hope that the members of the Council’s Planning and Development Committee see sense and don’t give planning permission on the 23rd June. I will certainly be there supporting Out Of This World, a shop I use often and which supplies me with many natural products I need due to having Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.

I have already written to the Council on this issue. One of the many things I like about Beeston is the variety of small independent retailers in the area, of which Out of This World is one. With the advent of what I honestly think is a totally unnecessary Tesco at the junction of Middle Street and Wollaton Road, the Council should be preserving these outlets, not allowing them to be put out of business. OOTW is a valuable local resource for all of us who have special dietary requirements as well as for those who prefer to buy organic, ethically sourced food and other products. Beeston would be much the poorer were it to disappear.
